Titratable acidity as tartaric or sulfuric acid
Equivalents
How do we calculate this?
The exact formulas used in this tab:
What this calculator does
Converts titratable acidity between tartaric acid and sulfuric acid, both in g/L. They are two ways of writing the same acidity; labs and books use one or the other.
The formula
Tartaric (g/L) = Sulfuric (g/L) × 1.5306
Worked example
- Acidity as tartaric acid: 6.5 g/L
- As sulfuric acid 6.5 ÷ 1.5306 = 4.25 g/L
About 4.25 g/L as sulfuric acid
Questions
Tartaric or sulfuric acidity — what’s the difference?
They are two ways of writing the same titratable acidity. Many wineries give it as tartaric acid; some regions, such as France, use sulfuric acid. To convert, multiply the sulfuric figure by 1.5306.
Is this the same as pH?
No. Titratable acidity is how much acid the wine holds; pH is how strong that acid is. Two wines with the same acidity can have different pH.
