How do we calculate this?
The exact formulas used in this tab:
What this calculator does
Works out the net weight of a grape delivery: what the scale read, minus the boxes and anything else that was on the scale. Use it at intake to know how much fruit actually came in.
- Boxes count as the number of boxes × the weight of one box.
- Anything else on the scale, such as pallets, bins or lids, goes in as an extra weight.
The formula
Net weight = scale reading − (boxes × weight per box) − other tare weightsA box or tare row with no weight of its own is skipped, never counted as zero
Worked example
- Scale reading: 1,250 kg
- 60 boxes of 1.2 kg each
- One pallet of 25 kg
- The boxes 60 × 1.2 = 72 kg
- The pallet 1 × 25 = 25 kg
- The grapes 1,250 − 72 − 25 = 1,153 kg
The grapes weigh 1,153 kg
Questions
How do I know what a box or a pallet weighs?
Weigh a few empty ones, take the average and type that. Boxes pick up juice and dirt during harvest, so their weight can creep up over the season — weigh them again now and then.
What if the delivery came in two kinds of box?
Put the more common box in “Number of boxes” and “Weight per box”. Then add the other kind as an extra weight, with its own weight each and how many. Each row counts as weight each × how many.
Why doesn’t it show 0 when the deductions are too big?
Because a net weight of zero or less means something was typed wrong, not that no fruit came in. When the boxes and other weights add up to the scale reading or more, the calculator shows how much it is subtracting from what. Check the scale reading, the box count or the other weights. A row with no weight typed is skipped, not counted as zero.
Can I work in pounds?
Yes. Choose pounds next to the scale reading: every weight on the page, and the answer, is then in pounds. With the same figures in pounds — 1,250 lb, 60 boxes of 1.2 lb and a 25 lb pallet — the net weight is 1,153 lb.
