What this calculator does
Converts a volume between liters, hectoliters, milliliters and US gallons. Type the volume in the unit you have, and every equivalent shows at once.
The formula
1 hL = 100 L1 L = 1000 mL1 US gal = 3.78541 L
Worked example
- A standard barrel: 225 L
- In hectoliters 225 ÷ 100 = 2.250 hL
- In milliliters 225 × 1,000 = 225,000 mL
- In US gallons 225 ÷ 3.78541 = 59.439 gal
225 L is 2.250 hL, 225,000 mL or about 59.439 gal
Questions
Which gallon does it use?
The US gallon: 1 US gal = 3.78541 L. The imperial gallon used in the UK is larger, about 4.546 L.
What is a hectoliter?
A hundred liters: 1 hL = 100 L. Wineries use it for larger volumes, and many additive doses are given per hectoliter (g/hL).
